KEEP SHETLAND BRITISH AND VOTE UKIP TO SCRAP HOLYROOD
Top UKIP candidate for Highlands and Islands, Robert Stephenson, has urged voters in Shetland to remain part of the United Kingdom and vote UKIP for a referendum to abolish the Scottish Parliament. This follows a motion passed by Shetland Islands Council to secede from Scotland and form an autonomous nation similar in status to the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
UKIP is fighting the forthcoming elections to the Scottish Parliament, scheduled for 6 May 2021, on a platform to hold a referendum to abolish the devolved government based in Holyrood. Robert said: “Since 1999 the Holyrood complex has not served Shetland, nor the Highlands and Islands region as a whole, well at all. However, rather than separate from Scotland and the United Kingdom, I urge the people of Shetland to lend their vote to UKIP who want to consign the Scottish Parliament to the dustbin of history.”
"A vote for UKIP will be a vote to not only reject separatism but a vote to affirm the United Kingdom. After over twenty years of miserable failure from Holyrood it is high time Scots are given a referendum to abolish this absurd, useless and wasteful institution. All the other parties including the Conservatives, the Liberals, the Greens, Labour and of course the SNP love devolution and do not want to see their cushy jobs disappear. Only UKIP will offer voters a real alternative; the choice to scrap Holyrood" said Robert.
Robert went on to say: "In 2014 Shetland wisely rejected the siren call of the SNP and voted No by 64%. I am a passionate believer in the integrity of the United Kingdom, from Shetland to the Isles of Scilly. We are one nation and the union has benefitted all of us handsomely over the centuries. It would be of immense sadness and regret if Shetland seceded now owing to SNP agitation and incompetence.”
Robert is a veteran campaigner who has stood for UKIP in the 2019 European Parliamentary elections and most recently in the last general election.
