Scottish Independence means border controls at Berwick and Gretna

April 10, 2017

Speaking to Daily Star Online, David Coburn MEP said: “If Scotland has free movement of people with the European Union, there would have to be an international frontier between Berwick and Gretna Green to stop unlimited immigration from the EU.

“Since business between Scotland and the rest of the UK is 4 times bigger than trade with the European Union, a border – 15 miles from Edinburgh – would be catastrophic for Scottish jobs and business.

“Scotland would be unable to join the Euro with a £15bn SNP deficit and would be unable to launch a currency on its own while sustaining this deficit. Can you imagine the appalling results for Scottish businesses with such uncertainty?

“Sturgeon would be forced by the EU to adopt austerity max on steroids to reduce the crippling SNP deficit to qualify for the Euro (ex.g. Stability and Growth Pact). This would mean massive cuts in healthcare, social housing, social security etc., greater than Greece. This is pure Sturgenomics ground from finest unicorn horn.”

“Newcastle would become New Edinburgh as business flees south from an unstable Scotland with a dubious currency”.

"The prospect of a second independence referendum between the Autumn of 2018 and the spring of 2019 is utterly preposterous. The UK will still be in negotiations with the EU at this time – the SNP seem to wish to cause maximum disruption, uncertainty and overall mayhem.

“They are running the risk of a "Hadrian’s border" with England - which is the SNP going from "Bad to Barmy" Scots don't need this nor want this.

"They (SNP) would rather be ruled from Strasbourg and Brussels rather than Edinburgh and London.”
